Discovery Channel features South Australian abalone diving
November 12, 2012
This November, Discovery Channel dives deep into some of the planet’s most hostile waters to launch the new three part series, Abalone Wars. The Australian production follows the men and women who risk their lives in one of the world’s most dangerous jobs – diving for abalone.
For these brave few, there is a killing to be made. Millions of dollars’ worth of abalone lay there, just below the surface ripe for the picking, but can the divers make it out alive?
The Southern Ocean, off the tip of South Australia is home to more sharks per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in the world. The risk of death by shark attack is very real here, many divers personally know the heart ache felt from losing loved ones. But that doesn’t stop this group of fearless men who, every season, battle against their nerves plunging to the depths and scouring the ocean floor for the much-prized green and black abalone.
In this never-before-seen series, we follow several fiercely competitive crews. Each sets out into the hostile waters to make enough money to support their families for the coming year.
In Port Lincoln there are only 32 quotas and this season each is licensed to catch 7 1/2 tonnes of abalone.

Abalone Council Australia Ltd launches new Australian Wild Abalone website
November 12, 2012
The Chairman of Abalone Council Australia Ltd, Dean Lisson, is very pleased to officially launch the new Australian Wild Abalone (AWA©) website.
“The launch of this new website heralds the beginning of an exciting marketing and promotion initiative developed on behalf of the Australian wild harvest Abalone industry. This visually exciting website will be the information hub for the new Australian Wild Abalone Brand and Certification Mark. Select Australian Abalone Exporters will now promote their premium grade wild harvest abalone products under the AWA© Certification Mark shown here. The presence of this new brand on export abalone products signifies that the product within is Certified Premium Grade Wild Australian Abalone harvested from the cool clean waters of Southern Australia and processed and packaged according to stringent Quality Assurance Guidelines”.
“This is the first time in the 50 year history of the Australian abalone industry that Australian Abalone exporters have adopted a collective approach to promote and sell Australian Wild Abalone products – each participating Abalone Export company will still market under their own brand but their products will also carry the AWA© Certification Mark designating that it is the finest quality wild harvest abalone.”
Abalone exporters who use the Australian Wild Abalone – AWA© Certification Mark are also required to use the new and innovative NanoTag© Brand Protection System. The NanoTag© system will guarantee the authenticity and provenance of all AWA© abalone products – anyone purchasing these products can be confident that they have received genuine premium grade Australian wild abalone – not some lesser quality “substitute” product – this is important in maintaining the integrity of the new AWA© Brand.”
